SPONTANEOUS CHRISTIANITY

But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.”
(Mk. 13:11)

It goes without saying that there are some things in the Christian’s life that require foresight, situations that need to be thought through. But generally speaking, in normal day-to-day living, Christianity is spontaneous. We are not to fret about what we’re going to say, or how we’re going to act in various circumstances that arise. Those among us who habitually plan ahead concerning our words and actions miss enjoying the moment.

Jacob Behmen (1575-1624) wrote, “Only give thyself utterly to Christ — this is the greatest and most important thing. Place all at His disposal. If thou possess Him, He will surely teach thee what thou shouldest do and what thou shouldest give up.He will teach thee to speak for Him; He will give thee courage and wisdom as to how thou shouldest behave. Be not anxious as to thy dealings with others, but commit it all to Him. He will assuredly work within thee that which is well-pleasing in His sight.”

Our only concern in our daily life is to be filled with God’s Spirit; the rest will take care of itself. Then will come to pass what Amy Carmichael wrote: “For a cup brimful of sweet water cannot spill even one drop of bitter water, however suddenly jolted.”
